Turns out, I’ll be posting whenever my ADHD deems fit! We can all thank her for the lack of any productivity!
Anyway, I was looking through my Letterboxd as one very sane, very normal person does when they need to doom scroll, and I saw my entry from a month ago for Crazy Rich Asians. The perfect airplane movie to ever exist. I swear it’s the only movie I can watch on a plane if I somehow break free from the clutches of my Dramamine for a second.
I think it’s a general consensus that Crazy Rich Asians is the airplane movie but it’s runtime is only so long. What about those overnight 12hr vacation trips with the crying baby, stale food, and snoring maniac? Well I’ve decided to devise a list.
But what constitutes a good airplane movie?
I think that varies person to person, but for me it has to keep my attention. It should either be fast paced or intriguing; I have to be enamored and forget I’m on a plane.
Without further ado, this is for all the poor souls who have to undergo the unfortunate experience that is traveling.
Crazy Rich Asians (Obviously.)
The absolute perfect airplane movie. Not just is it the perfect airplane movie; I’d venture to say it’s the perfect travel and background movie for every occasion. It follows Rachel Chu as she goes to Singapore for a wedding happening within her boyfriend Nick’s family. Only Nick’s family is rich. Like mega-tycoon type rich. Now, she must learn to navigate the waters with Nick’s disapproving family and Nick himself. It’s the perfect blend of romance, comedy, family feels, and drama that sucks you in, making you oblivious to the passage of time. Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh are absolutely wonderful in this; I truly believe it’s a one-of-a kind gem.
Daddy Day Care
I just wanna start off by saying that Letterboxd users will pay for this movies 2.8 star rating when its clearly a 5/5. Cute shenanigans with kids and fathers who don’t have a clue what they’re doing, but trying their best. What else could you ask for!! It’s a heartwarming comedy starring Eddie Murphy, Jeff Garlin and Eddie Zahn as they start their own children’s daycare after seeing the enormous price tag on some and the less than stellar care in others. An absolute must watch that’s filled with nostalgia!
Bullet Train
This one is more of a steady pace movie instead of fast paced, regardless, it’s so much fun. Ladybug is an assassin who is always down on his luck. When he subs in for one of his coworkers for a mission inside a bullet train, he gets more than he bargained for when multiple others have their missions entangled with his. Brad Pitt as Ladybug is great, but my favorite part is Lemon and Tangerine played by Brian Tyree Henry and Aaron Taylor Johnson respectively. They’re a hilarious duo and this action packed movie is loaded with other stars.
Lego Batman Movie
I know this is for kids but it’s actually really good. The original Lego Movie is also good, but something about the Batman one is just different. When Batman is faced with a new head of police and a new son he doesn’t remember adopting, he must learn to trust others in order to take down his arch nemesis, The Joker. The animation in the Lego movies are just incredibly satisfying to me which is enough to make me tune in, but the character development and Batman’s humor is sure to draw in more people.
Little Miss Sunshine
One of my favorites that follows a dysfunctional family as they take a roadtrip in order to get their youngest to a beauty pageant. It also hits you with the family feels like most do on this list, and it deals with some heavy topics regarding self image, queer identity, and suicide in a uplifting manner. It balances it’s tragedy with comedy in a bittersweet way and I’d say it’s a 50/50 whether you start crying or not, so I’d approach this one with caution.
I love this! Crazy Rich Asians is one of my all time favourite romcoms but I genuinely think I've only ever watch it on flights haha
I never understood what makes something an airplane movie or not an airplane movie. Last flight I took, I watched "Marcel The Shell With Shoes On", and any time someone looked at me, I just said, "Shut up, YOU'RE crying." Works for me.
